By Car -- From Liberia, head west toward Santa Cruz. Just past the village of Comunidad, turn right. In about 11km (6 3/4 miles) you'll come to a fork in the road. Take the left fork. It takes about 4 1/2 hours from San Jose.
By Bus -- Express buses (tel. 222-1650) leave San Jose for Playa del Coco at 8am and 2 and 4pm daily from Calle 24 between avenidas 5 and 7. Allow 5 hours for the trip. A one-way ticket is $5. From Liberia, buses to Playa del Coco leave at 5:30, 7, 9:30, and 11am and 12:30, 2:30, 4:30, and 6:30pm. A one-way ticket for the 40-minute trip costs $1.50. These bus schedules change frequently, so it's always best to check in advance. During the high season and on weekends, extra buses from Liberia are sometimes added.
Gray Line (tel. 220-2126; www.graylinecostarica.com) has a daily bus that leaves San José for Playa del Coco at 7am; the fare is $25. Interbus (tel. 283-5573; www.interbusonline.com) has two daily buses that leave San Jose for Playa del Coco at 8am and 2pm; the fare is $25. Both companies will pick you up at most San Jose-area hotels.
The direct bus for San Jose leaves Playa del Coco daily at 4 and 8am and 2pm. Buses for Liberia leave at 5:30,7, 9, and 11am and 1, 3, 5, and 6pm.
Depending on demand, the Playa del Coco buses sometimes go as far as Playa Ocotal; it's worth checking beforehand if possible. Otherwise, a taxi should cost around $5.
