The Capital of Costa Rica, San José lies at an altitude of 3,770 feet on a 20 mile by 50 mile plateau known as the Central Valley. Surrounding the valley are majestic mountains to the north and high hills to the south which are honeycombed with suburbs and farms, and which these authors make they're home.
San José, where roughly 35% of all Costa Ricans live, is the pulse of the country. Government, Finance and Economic sectors all headquarter here. It is also the starting point for most travelers as they begin to explore Costa Rica. The Central Valley holds much for the eager tourist.

Volcanoes Poas and Irazu are just 40 minutes from most San Jose hotels, and whose summits can easily be reached by car.
The town of Sarchi, just 30 minutes from the San Jose International airport, is a must see. Here you will find woodworkers at work, crafts, fine furniture, chairs and of course the ox carts for which Costa Rica is famous for.

La Paz Waterfall Gardens, near Poas Volcano National Park offer the visitor four majestic waterfalls and the chance to feed hummingbirds right out of your hand. Don't miss it! And be sure to have lunch on one of the many coffee plantations that dot the countryside.
The weather changes quite rapidly, so if your sightseeing in Costa Rica's Central Valley, bring another layer of clothing. If your visiting during Green Season, the rainier part of the year, make sure you have an umbrella handy.
