Parque National Rincon de la Vieja National Park

 
 The Rincon de la Vieja National Park is named after the active Volcano Rincon de la Vieja and is located north of Liberia, the main city of the province of Guanacaste. Those of you who undertake this exciting but still exhausting adventure will be rewarded with fantastic impressions of the crater, the unique view over a hardly accessible lagoon and the dry lowlands of Guanacaste. If you walk along the bottom of the volcano, you will see bubbling mud - holes, hot sulphur springs and small geysers. All these can be visited on well-maintained but sometimes steep trails.
 
 Its relatively remote location means that wildlife, rare elsewhere, is out in force here, with the major volcanic crater as a dramatic backdrop to the scene. At the moment, the volcano is gently active and does not present any danger.
 
 As visitors pass through a variety of different habitats as they ascend toe volcanoes, they can observe many tree species. The area has the country’s highest density of Costa Rica’s national flower, the purple orchid (Cattleya Skinneri).
 
 
 
Rincon de la Vieja is the most accessible of the volcanoes in the Cordillera de Guanacaste. Because of its relative remoteness, the park is not heavily visited, but several lodges just outside the park provide access, and transportation is easy to arrange from Liberia.
