Medical care in San Jose Costa Rica is adequate.  In areas outside of San Jose, medical care is more limited.  Costa Rica Doctors and hospitals often expect immediate cash payment for health services. US medical insurance is not always valid outside the United States.  Supplemental medical insurance with specific overseas coverage, including provision for medical evacuation, has proved useful in many emergencies.

Clinica Biblica is the top private clinic in the downtown area. Doctors speak English, French and German, and there is a 24-hour emergency room. Be prepared to pay for medical attention, though costs are generally much cheaper than in the USA or Europe.
