Jaco: Entertainment, Costa Rica

Playa de Jaco (Jaco Beach) in Costa Rica's Central Pacific coast, is quite the party town. You have a large number of bars and several discos to keep you busy.

The Disco La Central is a very popular place every night of the high season and every weekend during the off season.

La Central is right on the beach near the south end of town. There's a huge open-air hall that features the requisite 1970s flashing lights and suspended mirrored ball, as well as a garden bar in a thatch-roofed building that's a slightly quieter place to have a drink. The disco charges a nominal cover charge.

If your looking for a casual atmosphere, head to either the Beatle Bar or Onyx Bar. Both are located right on the main drag in town.

Note: There's a fair amount of prostitution in Jaco Beach. It's not uncommon to find working women at any of the above-mentioned places, as well as cruising other bars around town.

Sports fans can watch the latest games at Hotel Copacabana, Hotel Poseidon, or El Zarpe. The latter serves up good, reasonably priced burritos, burgers, and other assorted bar food.

If you're into gaming, head to the Stellaris Casino at the Marriott Los Sueños resort or the Jazz Casino (tel. 2-643-2255), located at the Hotel Amapola. The latter is a modest casino situated towards the southern end of the main road through Jaco Beach (Av. Pastor Díaz), about a block beyond where it takes a sharp turn inland towards the Costanera Sur.
