Events, Festival & Things to Do Costa Rica: Costa Rica Independence Day

Basilica de Nuestra Seņora de los Angeles in Cartago

When: Sept (annual)
Where: Costa Rica

Costa Rica's Independence Day corresponds to that of the whole of Central America and is marked with a suitably grand gesture.

A freedom torch is brought from Nicaragua by Costa Rican relay runners on the day before, 14 September, arriving on the same day in Cartago in time for the 6pm singing of the National Anthem. The whole country comes to a patriotic standstill that is followed by parades, marching bands and the expected excellent fiestas that carry on until dawn on 15 September.
