DOs and DON'Ts to doing business in Costa Rica
Do
- Expect to find English-speaking, well-educated workers.
- Plan on the country's approval of CAFTA to increase interest in Costa Rica from multinationals.
- Talk to other companies with experience in the country—they're out there.
- Visit Costa Rica's free trade parks and zones to get a glimpse of how this nation is preparing for the future.
- Plan on doing business over long social events and dinners.
- Plan on being taken in by the country's natural beauty—it's a tourist hotspot for a reason.
Don't
- Underestimate Costa Rican businesses' familiarity with the U.S. market and business customs.
- Plan on using hard-nosed negotiations with Costa Rican suppliers—they'll take relationships over price.
- Expect a third-world poverty-stricken nation.
- Bother hiring a translator.
- Assume a lack of punctuality is a sign of disrespect. Like any growing nation, traffic snarls can be a problem.
