Costa Rica Currency
Costa Rica's national currency is the Colon; dollars and travelers checks, can be exchanged at banks and hotels. DO NOT exchange money on the street with the many of the currency vendors you see on the street corners and around the bigger Costa Rica hotels. Much of the money they trade is counterfeit!

The exchange rate fluctuates in small increments daily. If you want to change cash, stick to US dollars. The best bet for travelerīs checks is also US dollars, as other currencies will rarely be accepted. Major credit cards are accepted in most larger hotels, stores, restaurants and car rental agencies, but at smaller and more remote businesses, one should be prepared to pay cash.
Many businesses will accept US Dollars, ask first, and if paying by credit card, first ask the cash price, it will always be lower, and then you can make the decision.
MANY times, the business will give you an incentive for cash, epecially when negotiating a better price.. mention that you will pay cash and you will often get a better deal.
