Costa Rica to serve as non-permanent member of UN security Council

Costa Rican Foreign Minister Bruno Stagno said Friday that his country will serve as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for two years starting on Jan. 1.

This Central American country will work to improve the cooperation between the UN Security Council and the International Criminal Court (ICC) in fighting crimes against humanity, Stagno, who was attending a 15-day ICC meeting in New York, said in a communique.

The foreign minister has also been working as president of the ICC's Assembly of States Parties since Nov. 28, 2005.

"Costa Rica intends to promote peace and justice at the same time and in a parallel manner," he said.

During its participation in the UN Security Council, Costa Rica will watch for the respect of international laws and international humanitarian rights, as well as disarmament and peace, Stagno said.
