Surfing the Southern Pacific Coast of Costa Rica!

Puerto Jimenez / South Osa Peninusla

Pavones
Considered one of the longest lefts in the world, when the swell goes in the right direction you can connect to different sections for an 800 meter (more than 2400 feet) long ride. So long, in fact, that it’s easier to walk back up the beach than it is to paddle back to the starting point! From here you can take a boat across the Golfo Dulce to Matapalo or drive through Puerto Jimenez to get there.

Punto Burica
This very remote & little explored reef break, accessible only by boat from Pavones, is the last beach to the south on the Pacific coast.

Matapalo
This tiny little surfers paradise boasts three fantastic surf breaks and is surrounded by tropical rainforest.

If the surf is flat:

  • Go tree climbing & waterfall rappelling for a thrill.
  • Get a guide & go for a jungle hike. Matapalo is teeming with exotic birds, amphibians, monkeys & all kinds of cool insects!
Go have a cold one at Martina’s Bar! Enjoy the beautiful beach or go to town & check your email & get supplies

Drake Bay / North Osa Peninsula

Drake Bay
If you want adventure travel – well Drake Bay is for you - it is remote & wild. And isolated. The isolated surf spot is accessible only by boat and offers several areas of long, powerful waves during a big swell.

If the surf is flat:

  • The beaches are beautiful, the rainforest is right there and animals & wildlife galore! Get out the binoculars & watch the feathered spectacular birds!

  • You are at the northern gate of Corcovado National Park so go explore – get a guide to go with you & you will not be disappointed. Corcovado is the largest virgin lowland tropical rainforest in Central America

  • Go snorkeling & diving. Get PADI certified if you aren’t already. Rental snorkeling, diving equipment is available from a few establishments. Go to Cano Island just offshore & explore the island. There are stone spheres, which are believed to have been carved by the Pre-Columbian, who used to inhabit the island.

The coral reefs are bursting with life just off shore & that is a major draw here

Dominical

Dominical
Powerful & consistent beach break with an exuberant tropical landscape. The area is surrounded by rainforest and the Talamanca Mountains meet the ocean just south of town. The river mouth changes all the time, with both lefts & rights and that beach break goes on for miles with several spots to shred. All receive south & west swells.

If the surf is flat:

  • There is a lot to do here if the surf is quiet. Hike mount Chirripo the highest peak in Central America at 12,533 feet 3820 meters. You’ll get chilled so go well prepared & get a guide!

  • Check out Playa Ballena where snorkeling & diving are extraordinary.

  • Go to Uvita & see the whales tail where the wave break into each other & create a natural phenomenon to the beach & makes it look like a whales tail!

  • Manuel Antonio is not far, another of Costa Rica’s National Parks.

  • A short drive (approx 45 min) to San Isidro if you want to catch a little small city action & watch lots of pretty girls (here there are 9 girls to every guy!)

  • On the way to San Isidro is a beautiful waterfall which is breath taking & COLD!

  • GO horseback riding, kayaking, bird watching, fishing, hiking- the area has it all!

There are many different types of lodging available in the Southern Pacific Coast., such as Dominical, Uvita and Ojochal. Puerto Jimenez is your starting point into Corcovado National Park Day trip to Carate, Matapalo or Corcovado are all located in the Osa Peninsula Region of Costa Rica.
