If you have little need for San Jose and would like a comfortable base for exploring the rest of Costa Rica, consider this fine little country inn. It began as a converted private home, and the owners have been adding elegant little cottages around their grounds, which command an impressive view over the Rio Grande and its steep-walled canyon. The architecture here has a strong Japanese influence. The rooms are all either independent or duplex villas. The villas are open and airy, with lots of windows letting in lots of light. You'll also find plenty of varnished woodwork, small kitchenettes (in some), and comfortable wraparound decks. My favorites are the Mona Lisa and Ylang-Ylang suites, which are octagonal affairs set on the edge of the bluff with great views and featuring private outdoor showers.

The grounds are wonderfully landscaped, with several inviting seating areas among a wealth of flowering tropical plants. There are stunning views from the restaurant, which features a regularly changing menu of fine international cuisine prepared with fresh local ingredients. The hotel is located 20 minutes north of the Juan Santamarķa Airport, and staying here can cut as much as an hour off your travel time to the Pacific coast beaches, Arenal Volcano, and the Monteverde Cloud Forest.

Facilities: Restaurant; midsize tile pool w/interesting little fountain/waterfall; tennis court; Jacuzzi; horseback riding; limited room service (6:30am-10pm); laundry service; free Wi-Fi

San Jose Guide:

San Jose, the Capital of Costa Rica, is the hub of all transportation in Costa Rica. For that reason, it is usually the first place you will visit while in Costa Rica. It lies between three Costa Rica volcanoes. There is a large variety of Costa Rica hotels, parks, restaurants and attractions for visitors. The first thing noticed about San Jose is the local friendliness. The city is set up on a pretty logical grid system. When on foot and touring the capital, Costa Ricans, also known as Ticos, are always willing to lend a hand with directions. Always remember though, locals use landmarks not street names for directions, and if you just can't figure out where you are, find a local church. Every church in Costa Rica faces west. While in the Capital, you have access to the best public transportation in all of Central America
