Costa Rica Food and Gas Prices on the Rise

Restaurants Costa Rica
Over the past 12 months, the cost of food and non-alcoholic beverages throughout Costa Rica increased 21 percent. Eating out in restaurants is 15 percent more expensive than a year ago; transportation is up 13.5 percent from March 2007.

These increases were recorded by the National Statistics and Census Bureau (INEC in Spanish) in February and amount to a 1.11 percent overall increase. In January, the hike had been 0.75 percent. In February, the Central Bank had announced its monetary program for this year, which includes a 7 percent to 9 percent overall inflation estimate for the year. On the other hand, interest rates for savings are 4.37 percent as an average, far below the 11.40 percent average inflation for the 12 months from March 2007 through February 2008.
