Canopy Tours in Manuel Antonio/Quepos

About 20 minutes outside of Quepos is Rainmaker Nature Refuge (tel. 777-3565). The main attraction here is a system of connected suspension bridges strung through the forest canopy, crisscrossing a deep ravine. There are six bridges; the longest is 90m (295 ft.) across. There are also a small network of trails and some great swimming holes. A half-day tour, including a light breakfast, a buffet lunch, round-trip transportation from Quepos, and a guide, costs $65 per person. Tours leave every morning, and most hotels in the area can book them for you.

There are also several canopy tours in the area. The most adventurous are offered by Canopy Safari (tel. 777-0100) and Dream Forest Canopy Tour (tel. 777-4567). Both consist of a series of platforms connected by zip lines. Adventurers use a harness-and-pulley system to "zip" between platforms, using a leather-gloved hand as their only brake.

The Titi Canopy Tour (tel. 777-1020) is a similar but mellower setup. A canopy tour should run you between $45 and $65 per person.

If you're looking for more adventure, the folks at Pacific Ecotours (tel. 777-4567) run a canoeing tour, which is a hike and scramble down through a mountain river. The trip includes four rappels down the face of waterfalls, and several stops to dive into and swim in natural jungle pools. This half-day tour, including lunch, costs $75.
