Cahuita Adventure Tours & Attractions, Costa Rica's Caribbean Coast
Cahuita Tour Operators offer glass-bottom-boat and snorkeling trips, jungle tours, white-water rafting trips, and Jeep tours to the Bribri Reservation. Outside Cahuita National Park is the best place for swimming, Playa Negra.
If you want to take advantage of any organized adventure trips or tours while in Cahuita, there are plenty of options. I recommend Turística Cahuita Tours Information Center (tel./fax 755-0071), on the main road heading toward Playa Negra, and Roberto Tours (tel. 755-0117), 50m (164 ft.) south of the bus stop, offer similar tours at similar prices. Most of the companies offer multiday trips to Tortuguero, as well as to Bocas del Toro, Panama.
Cahuita Tours and Adventure Center (tel. 755-0232), on the village's main street heading out toward Playa Negra. Cahuita Tours offers glass-bottom-boat and snorkeling trips ($20 per person), jungle tours ($25), white-water rafting trips ($95), and Jeep tours to the Bribri Reservation ($60).
Brigitte (tel. 755-0053) rents horses for $10 per hour (you must have experience) and offers guided horseback tours for $35 to $40. She also rents mountain bikes for $8 per day or $25 per week.
Bird-watchers and sloth lovers should head north 9km (5 1/2 miles) to Aviarios del Caribe [ST] (tel./fax 750-0775), where more than 325 species of birds have been sighted in the immediate area. These folks also run a sloth rehabilitation project. The 3 1/2-hour canoe tour through the surrounding estuary costs $30 per person and leaves at 6am and 3pm. There's also a 1 1/4-hour canoe tour combination that includes a visit to the sloth rehabilitation center and a self-guided hike on its trails for $20 per person. This option is available between 8am and 2:30pm. It's best to make reservations in advance.
From Cahuita national park area, take a day trip to lively town of Puerto Viejo and Surf Costa Rica's famous Salsa Bravas! Visit the neighboring Caribbean Beaches such as Uva, Chiquita or Manzanillo Beach.
