Dogs/Cats from Costa Rica to the U.S.

If pet has been in Costa Rica for less than 1 month: 

(Dogs/Cats from the U.S. to Costa Rica) have documents certified at: Vigilancia de la Salud, Ministry of Health, Street 16, Avenues 6 & 8, San Jose, Costa Rica, open Monday thru Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., telephone:  (506) 255-1427

 

If pet has been in Costa Rica for more than 1 month:  

  • Obtain Health Certificate from veterinarian 
  • Obtain Export Permit from Vigilancia de la Salud Department, Costa Rican Ministry of Health, Street 16, Avenues 6 & 8, San Jose, open Monday thru Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., telephone:  (506) 255-1427

Also bring the following stamps:  1 Timbre Fiscal (stamp with a value higher than 20 colones) and 1 Timbre de Archivo (these stamps are available at major bookstores in Costa Rica)

    • It will take 2 business days to obtain the export permit

Veterinary officer from Quarantine Department of the Costa Rican Ministry of Agriculture will review/seal the documents at the port of departure

 
US Port officers examine pet at US port of entry to verify that the pet is healthy.
