Rincon de la Vieja, Costa Rica
Costa Rica's Rincon de la Vieja national park is named after the active Volcano Rincon de la Vieja and is located north of Liberia, the main city of the province of Guanacaste Those of you who undertake this exciting but still exhausting adventure will be rewarded with fantastic impressions of the crater, the unique view over a hardly accessible lagoon and the dry lowlands of Guanacaste.

Rincon de la Vieja: Getting There
Costa Rica Rincon de la Vieja National Park, Getting There: Las Pailas sector is accessible by a decent 20km gravel road beginning at a signed turnoff from Costa Rica's Interamericana 5 km north of Liberia; I personally recommend a 4WD to get there.

Rincon de la Vieja: Volcanic History
Costa Rica's Rincon de la Vieja volcano is indeed an active volcano. This northern area of Costa Rica is remote, making volcano monitoring difficult. Very few population centers are located within a distance of 10 Km from the volcano. Its last strong eruption period was between 1966 and 1970, when it produced earthquakes, ash clouds and underground noises.
