Car theft is an increasing problem in Costa Rica.  Following are some precautionary steps and basic preventive measures that should be followed by both residents and tourists:

1.          Carry reputable, U.S. based car insurance.

2.          Try to avoid having to park your car on the street at night ... consider taking a taxi if that’s your  only  parking option.

3.          Obtain and utilize anti-theft devices such as fuel cutoff and locking devices.

4.          Never leave your keys in the car or ignition.

5.          Always lock your car, even if it's in front of your home/hotel.

6.          Copy your tag number and vehicle identification number (VIN) on a card and keep them with your driver's license.

7.          Keep the registration with you, not in the car.

8.          Keep the keys to your home/hotel and car separate.

9.          Keep your car in good running condition.  Make sure there's enough gas to get from one place to another.

10.      Park in lighted areas.

11.      Park in paid lots or parking attendant on duty.

12.      Avoid parking in isolated areas.

13.      Never leave valuables in plain view, even if your car is locked.

If thieves demand your car, let them have it, walk away,  and do not resist.
