North of the City of Limon
On the Northern end of the Limon Province canals and freshwater lagoons extend to the Tortuguero and the Colorado River.
Tortuguero National Park:
Located in the Northern section of Limon province you will find the Tortuguero.
The Tortuguero is an amazing destination in Costa Rica no one should miss. It has hundreds of miles untouched beauty. A natural system of canals and freshwater lagoons with picturesque scenery. The beach at Tortuguero national park is a very important and protected nesting place for a variety of turtles (mainly the green sea turtle).
The Tortuguero Canal is often called Costa Rica's Amazon because its surrounding rainforest. The Tortuguero Canal is a combination of natural and man-made canals. You can take a trip through the Tortuguero in a small boat. There you can get a close up look at nature. Crocodiles are just a few yards away. Most of the time you can spot monkeys swinging through the trees, slow moving sloths, and catch a glimpse of a variety of wild birds and wild flowers (orchids).
Barra del Colorado Wildlife Refuge:
Barra del Colorado Wildlife Refuge protects forests, mangroves, canals and marine areas on the northern Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica.
Caño Palma Biological Research Station is located at the Barra del Colorado Wildlife Refuge.
The research station is run by the Canadian Organization for Tropical Education and Rainforest Conservation.
There are NO public facilities here. This zone is designated for research and is only accessible by small boat.
However, A trail system has been established into the forested area of the Station. Rivers, streams and lagoons are conveniently nearby to explore.
