Tambor Beach on Costa Rica's Nicoya Peninsula
Playa Tambor is located to the south of Costa Rica's Nicoya Peninsula in the calm horseshoe Bay of Bahía Ballena (Whale Bay).
During Costa Rica's dry season whales used to frequent these waters, but have ceased because of increased coastal activity.
A safe swimming beach, Tambor is the perfect family destination for those seeking peace and quiet.
Tambor's volcanic grey sand and the gentle surf are great for families with small children or the timid swimmer. Set up a picnic lunch and enjoy the afternoon under the palm trees. See exotic species of Flora & Fauna. Enjoy walking 6 kilometers of unending beach, sunbathe or take in one of Costa Rica's adventure tours. During low tide, you'll find many locals enjoying a game of soccer or volleyball. Tambor beach is easily accessible by car.
The valley of Tambor is cradled by forested hills which form part of the Biological corridor of the Nicoya Peninsula. On the Northern side of Tambor is the Curu Wildlife Reserve which protects various Ecological habitats and a wealth of wildlife. It borders Islas Tortugas, a tropical Island paradise which can be visited by boat from Tambor. At the Southern end you’ll find a small fishing community and boat dock.
Tambor has a variety of accommodations from Cabinas, beachfront hotels, to lodging overlooking the landscape of Rio Panica.
The village of Tambor is small and has managed to preserve a tranquil, laid-back atmosphere. You can find a Supermarket, Souvenir Shops, car rentals, Restaurants and Sodas serving up Costa Rica favorites and many Tour operators.
Tambor boasts the only airport on the Southern Nicoya Peninsula. Several times per day Nature Air and Sansa Airlines offer 20-min flights to San Jose, or other destinations in Costa Rica.
6 km north of Tambor village, is the world famous Hotel Playa Tambor. One of Costa Rica's first all-inclusive Resort, with 402 rooms, a Casino and Golf course.
