The magazine Surfos sent 17 Latin American surfers on a Surfari that began in Jaco Beach on September 12, continued in Playa Hermosa, Esterillos, traveled for seven hours and arrived in Guanacaste’s Playa Negra and Avellanas last month. The Costa Rica surf trip will be featured in a 20-page spread in the November issue of the magazine.
Latin Soup 2 will also be released on a DVD.
Called Latin Soup 2, the gang spent three days in the central zone of Costa Rica, then moved on to Playa Negra, with an addition two-day session. In Guanacaste, overall trip sponsor Red Bull arranged water, shoreline, and aerial photos of the Argentineans Martín Passeri, Maxi Siri, Lucas Santamaría and Leandro Usuna, who enlisted their strongest arsenal to beat the waves. The Ecuadorians Carlos "Cabezón" Goncalves and Sebastián Santos went head on in the second point of the journey, the breaks of Tamarindo, where they were joined by the strong Tico contingent—Diego Naranjo, Jason Torres, Sean Braun, Josymar Fuentes and Matías Braun—as well as Panamanian champ Gary Saavedra.
(Mexicans Ángelo Lozano and David Rutherford already had to leave trip for Peru competed in the Billabong Pro Junior and Ruttherford is looking to push himself with into the 1st place of the Mexican ranking with the last national date of the Mexican surf contest. Usuna left the trip after Negra to head to Peru as well.)
The local portion of the Costa Rica surf trip worked out very well, considering all the rain and muddy ocean conditions local surfers had been suffering through this low season. The surfers had good waves, and according to Editor Carlos Brenes, “In general the conditions of the sea and the climate appeared to date like good and very good.”
The surfers continued throughout the rest of Costa Rica, including the Caribbean costal surf spots.
