Relocating and Reinventing Ourselves in Costa Rica

Jan, Greg...and Pooch, at their small hotel in Costa Rica.
If writing isn’t your thing, don’t worry—opportunities for creating a new life overseas are endless. Take Greg Bertrand and Jan Tilston for example. They left Toronto in 2002 to build a small hotel--and a new life--in Costa Rica. Greg, a partner in a graphic arts firm, and Jan, a family law attorney and Director of the Toronto Family Law Office, had had enough of cold winters and workday stress.

“We made the transition to Costa Rica in stages over 10 years. To buy the land we extended the mortgage on our house in Toronto, Canada and amortized the loan over a longer period. We held onto the land for five years, during which time our children finished school and we prepared to leave our jobs. It is amazing how much you can save when you have a long-term dream. We still took holidays but we did not make any large consumer purchases during that time unless the purchase was related to our move to Costa Rica.”

They had both traveled quite a bit over the years…to the U.S., Europe, Africa, South America, and throughout the Caribbean. But they decided that in the future, they’d like the world of travel to come to them.

As you can see from Greg and Jan, reinventing yourself doesn’t have to happen overnight, and careful planning will definitely help make your dreams take shape.
