Pavones, Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica Overview

For the ultimate Costa Rica surf vacation, be sure to visit this tiny beachfront community. Pavones is located along Costa Rica’s southern Pacific Coast and is the perfect destination for nature lovers as well as those who want to catch some of the best long waves in the world. Waves here hit their peak during Costa Rica’s rainy season from April to October. Waves in this area have an excellent left point, hold their shape, and the swells  are ideal for the serious surfer.

On a good day, the south swells coming in to Pavones turn into perfect lefts that hollow out, allowing surfers to ride up to 3 minutes at a time!

The mile long beach Pavones lies around 15 km south of Playa Zancudo and has some of the best surf on the Pacific Coast of North & South America. Located some 400 km south of the capital city San Jose.

The best way to get to Pavones is via Golfito, where you can take a taxi to town. The quickest way to get to Pavones is to fly into Coto 47 from San Jose and take a taxi to Pavones.

Keep in mind, when visiting this secluded Costa Rica surfing beach, that there is little to do other than surf. Ideal for sun bathing or a nice long walk, but the coast is rocky.  You can enjoy the peace and quiet and take in the surrounding natural beauty.

North of Pavones are some gorgeous remote beaches and snorkeling reefs. You can spend the day basking in the sun or hanging out in the local beachfront cantinas. Pavones hotels and accommodations are basic at best, or you can choose to stay at the exclusive Tiskita Jungle Lodge, a private biological reserve.
