This sprawling hotel is the largest all-inclusive resort in Costa Rica. From the massive open-air reception building down to the free-form swimming pool (allegedly the largest in Central America), everything here is on a grand scale. There's a small-village feel to the layout; most of the rooms are located in 30 separate two-story buildings, reached by way of constantly circulating shuttles. All rooms are suites and come with either one king-size bed or two double beds in a raised bedroom nook. Down below there's a comfortable sitting area, with a couch, coffee table, and chairs with ottomans. The bathrooms are large and modern, with marble tiles, full tubs, bidets, and a telephone. Each unit has a garden patio or a small balcony. Although the rooms are exactly the same, the Royal level suites come with private butler service and VIP attention. Only three of the building units actually front the ocean, and two of these contain the Presidential suites, which have double the living area of the standard suites and even more luxurious appointments. Unlike most all-inclusives, only one of the restaurants here is buffet; the rest are sit-down a la carte affairs, although they are still decidedly mediocre.

The hotel has a beautiful golf course, with broad, open holes, rolling hills, and the occasional sea view. Because of the golf course and its ponds and wetlands, there's good bird-watching here, with healthy populations of parrots, roseate spoonbills, and wood storks. Because the hotel owns so much land behind Playa Conchal, guests here have almost exclusive access to this crushed-seashell beach.

Facilities: 8 restaurants; 3 bars; 2 lounges; casino, dance club, massive free-form pool w/several Jacuzzis, and another large outdoor pool for Royal Level suites; Robert Trent Jones II-designed 18-hole golf course and pro shop; 4 lighted tennis courts; exercise room; modest exercise facilities and spa; watersports equipment rental; bike rental; children's programs; concierge; tour desk; car-rental desk; modest business center; shopping arcade; 24-hr. room service; in-room massage; babysitting; laundry service; nonsmoking rooms.
