A national state of emergency has been declared in Nicaragua following heavy rains. El Salvador and Costa Rica have also been affected by the downpours.
More than 20,000 people in 168 Nicaraguan communities are being affected by flooding. Authorities report that some 11,000 people have been evacuated from their homes into shelters.
The rains are a second blow to Central America in many months, after Hurricane Felix battered the country in September.
World Vision teams are providing hundreds of families with emergency relief, including medicines, blankets, clean water and food. The organization is also assessing the impact on local agriculture. Nicaraguan government reports suggest that at least 106,000 hectares of crops have been lost nationally.
Meanwhile, in El Salvador, communities have been affected by landslides and flooding following days of continuous rain. Around 700 people have been evacuated. World Vision is monitoring the situation closely, carrying out damage assessments and responding to the most urgent needs.
Heavy rains have ceased in Costa Rica, but flooding levels remain and some 2,000 people are still living in temporary shelters. World Vision is continuing to support affected families in 20 shelters with hygiene kits and needed food.
