Flooding in Costa Rica's Caribbean and Northern Zone

Costa Rica Weather
The Northern Zone and Caribbean have been hit with heavy rains due to a cold front from Nicaragua to Costa Rica.

The National Meteorological Institute (IMN) is monitoring another front that could be headed to Costa Rica from the U.S. The institute predicts rains are likely to continue through Saturday.

Yesterday, these Costa Rica areas remained under a yellow alert, while some families headed to one of four shelters made available. They we're forced to abandon their homes due to flooding, according to the National Emergency Commission (CNE).

More than 30 communities in the Northern Zone cantons of Upala and San Carlos and the Caribbean-slope areas of Sarapiquí and Pococí have seen flooding and more than 1,300 families have been affected so far, the statement said.

Approximately 125 people remain in four shelters in Sarapiquí and Pococí.
