San Jose Guide:
San Jose, the
Capital of Costa Rica, is the hub of all transportation in Costa Rica. For that reason, it is usually the first place you will visit while in Costa Rica. It lies between three Costa Rica volcanoes. There is a large variety of Costa Rica hotels, National Parks, restaurants and tours & attractions for visitors. The first thing noticed about San Jose is the local friendliness. The city is set up on a pretty logical grid system. When on foot and touring the capital, Costa Ricans, also known as Ticos, are always willing to lend a hand with directions. Always remember though, locals use landmarks not street names for directions, and if you just can't figure out where you are, find a local church. Every church in Costa Rica faces west. While in the Capital, you have access to the best public transportation in all of Central America.

Costa Rica: "The Real Coffee Tour"

Imagine following the journey of a coffee bean from the plantation - to the processing plant to a cup of gourmet coffee. When you take the "Real Coffee Tour" at Doka Estate you'll do exactly that! On the fertile slopes of Costa Rica's famous Poas Volcano National Park, exists a legend in the world of fine coffee. Learn what makes one of the world's finest coffees from the tree to the cup!

A visit to Cafe Tres Generaciones offers an outstanding opportunity to learn everything you always wanted to know about coffee processing, while the rolling hills and beautiful scenery engulf you.

Doka Estate is a private, family owned coffee estate which belongs to the Vargas Ruiz family, locals and coffee pioneers for over 70 years. It is the oldest-functioning water mill in Costa Rica, and one of the original farms. This 600 acres estate is located 4,500 ft above sea level, producing the finest Arabica coffee.  The volcanic soil, crisp clean mountain air and abundant sunshine make for ideal growing conditions. Located in the Costa Rica capital of coffee, Sabanilla de Alajuela, just 20 minutes from the international airport and 1 hour to downtown San Jose, the Doka Coffee Tour can easily be combined with a Lapaz Waterfall Gardens and Poas Volcano day trip.

For the second year in a row Doka Estate has been awarded the 'Best Coffee Farm in the World' by Sintercafe. This prestigious event takes place every November throughout Costa Rica.

The Doka Coffee Tour takes you through a real working gourmet coffee plantation - you will see three generations of coffee tradition. The main objective of the Coffee Tour is to educate and inform tourists about the process of growing coffee and takes you throughout our Doka Estate and watermill. Their professional acting troupe, dressed in traditional garb, will escort you through interactive tour through the history of coffee. Very knowledgeable and informative, they guarantee to make the tour a special learning experience. You will hear about the history of the coffee farm, it's owners, it's geographic location, the traditional coffee growing methods, and also the coffee brewing tradition of 'chorrear'.

After sampling a variety of Costa Rican coffee, the tour takes you to Almacigo, your first stop, where you'll see the step by step process of growing and producing fine coffee. From planting the seed to picking the ripened coffee berries.

From here you will visit the 'recibidor' (coffee bean receiver) where you will be shown the first classification of the coffee beans as well as the different brands and flavors processed on the estate.

The oldest working water powered mill in the country (beneficio) is the next stop. You will see the peeling machines in progress, the fermentation tanks, bodega, where we store our coffee and have it ready for export. You will also visit the sun drying patios and the roasting hall where you can savor the fragrance of our different roasts. We soon found we preferred the Peaberry, made from a rare coffee bean that's actually a mutation of the normal coffee bean.

Enjoy they're delicious Tico Style Buffet featuring some of Costa Rica's favorites while overlooking the sweeping hills of the plantation. Be sure to visit the souvenir shop stocked with great coffee, liquors, treats and unique Costa Rican crafts. Tours available 7 days a week.
