Costa Rica Students Start New School Year

Almost 1 million Costa Rica students headed to classes yesterday as the new 2008 school year begins. Over 960 thousand kids get back on their morning and afternoon schedules.

The 2008 year includes a number of 205 school days. The regular scheduled school breaks take place Easter week, Semana Santa and between July 7 and 18.

Some 45 thousand Costa Rica teachers work for the Educational system (Ministerio de Educación Pública - MEP).

This year the MEP has 30 new schools throughout Costa Rica. In more remote rural areas, classes are still being held in local community centers and churches.

Due to lack of funds, over 12 thousand students will go without a desk. MEP will be paying for some 60 thousand students' public transportation, as well providing lunches for over 600 thousand students.
