Costa Rica's Plan for New Road From Quepos to Dominical Finally On Its Way
Plans for a paved road between the fishing town of Quepos on Costa Rica's Central Pacific and Dominical on the Southern Pacific seem to finally be under way. Local Costa Rica residents have been waiting for years and were starting to doubt it ever coming into fruition.
Talks of this new road have been discussed for over 25 years, and finally a contractor has been assigned to undertake the paving of Costanera Sur just north of Dominical.
The highway section from Savegre to Dominical is 22.6 kilometers, about 14 miles, and the responsibility of Constructora Solís-Sánchez Carvajal. The contract is valued at $15.5 million.
A similar project is under way between Quepos and Savegre. Consorcio Meco-Santa Fe was hired to make it happen. The stretch is about 19 kilometers, about 13 miles, and will cost $16.4 million. Deadlines for this project is the end of the year if bad weather does not intervene.
Heavy trucks have been using the route for years, but frequent washouts stall traffic for sometime days.
The paved road will facilitate travel between the 2 Pacific areas, and save a great deal of time. Many now travel to San Isidro to get to Dominical down to Ojochal and the Osa Peninsula area. Travel between Quepos and Dominical could soon be done in approximately 30 minutes.
The Costanera Sur is one of the great scenic drives of Costa Rica. The road parallels the Pacific the whole distance from Dominical to Quepos. Unfortunately, it has been a gravel washboard. With some new and rebuilt bridges and paving, residents hope they have a dependable road that withstands the Costa Rica weather.
