Costa Rica Jaco Beach Tourist Police Chief Arrested
A judge suspended a Jaco Beach chief of police as well as another police officer for 3 months on allegations of stealing from tourists.
Carlos Mendez, Garabito district tourist police chief, and a Jaco Beach municipal police officer identified by the last name Ulloa, are accused of indirectly stealing a video camera from Argentinean tourists.
Central Pacific's Jaco beach judicial investigation police chief Klever Paco, said the original four thieves were Colombians. After stealing a car, money and a camera near Playa Hermosa, the assailants dumped the camera in an nearby field.
According to Paco, officers Mendez and Ulloa took advantage of their findings and left the stolen item out of their official report. “It's a delicate matter but the law is being well applied,” Paco said. “Additional charges could be filed because Mendez used an official police vehicle when they went to the field.”
A third tourist police named Alpízar was also with the men during the alleged crime. He has yet to be suspended.
“There's not enough proof against him,” Paco said.
The suspended officers were ordered to keep away from the central pacific coast surf town of Jaco, and not speak to the witnesses. Their suspension could be extended another three months and ultimately be fired.
No charges are being pursued against the original thieves, since no stolen items were found in their possession.
