Located around the "backside" of the San Jose Internationl airport, in San Antonio de Belen, this longstanding Costa Rica hotel has been entirely updated, expanded and redone. All of the rooms are spacious and feature new furnishings and decor, including sturdy beds with artistic wood and metal headboards adorned with sculpted cala lilies. Most have wood floors and large bathrooms. I'd ask for one either in the new section, or on the second floor of the older building. The suites have a Jacuzzi tub and sitting area. There are several lounge areas spread around the rambling structure, as well as a pool table on a large open second-floor veranda. The namesake El Rodeo steakhouse restaurant here is excellent.

When on foot and touring the capital, Costa Ricans, also known as Ticos, are always willing to lend a hand with directions. Always remember though, locals use landmarks not street names for directions, and if you just can't figure out where you are, find a local church. Every church in Costa Rica faces west. While in the Capital, you have access to the best public transportation in all of Central America.
