Colombian Airlines Offer Flights to Costa Rica

Colombian airlines have set their eyes on Costa Rica as part of their expansion plans to new markets.

Avianca and AeroRepública have announced regular flights to the Juan Santamaría International Airport (San Jose, Costa Rica), offering up to 17 flights from Colombia and Panama.

The arrival of the Colombian Airlines is due to an increase in business and tourists travel between the two countries.

Avianca, the first to offer its flights since January 21, offers direct flights between San Jose and Bogotá. The Avianca route was been operated by TACA Airlines, however, Avianca now flies its customers on its Fokker-100 planes.

According to CETAC, the Costa Rican civil aviation authority, Avianca is looking for a five year permanent deal to fly in and out of Santamaría Airport. For now, the airline is operating on a temporary permit, with flights on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

AeroRepública is still in the process of obtaining permits with no date being set to start operations.

AeroRepública is owned by the Panamian airline, Copa Airlines, and will have daily flights between San Jose, Panama City and Bogotá once the permits are issued.

The flights will be between the Juan Santamaría, Tocumen and El Dorado airports in Costa Rica, Panama and Colombia, respectively.

There is no word if Copa will discontinue its daily flight on the same route in favor of AeroRepública or will operate both routes at the same time.
