Ana Wien Sculptures in Central Pacific, Costa Rica

Costa Rica Sculpture Exhibit
There is an oasis under Santa Ana’s radiant sun. It is a small studio where life overflows in every corner; through the walls and floors. This is where the artist Ana Wien makes her paintings appear, as if created from sheer light.

Blue, red, yellow; white; flowers; jewelry; wood; seashells. Life flows from her paintings, like the sea, as from the loving hands of a mother. In 2006, the Costa Rican artist exposed her creations in the Artist & Life exhibition, in the Toit de la Grand Arch de la Défense, in Paris, where she acted as an ambassador of our entire continent to the eyes of the whole World.

The burst of colors and materials converts Ana Wien’s paintings into a face to face conversation with life in its purest essence. Her art pulls the most sensitive strings in our body through the sincerity and joy of her strokes.

If we look at Ana’s schedule and passport, we can see that she has not taken a break, not for a single day, from doing what she loves.

This is a pleasure not shared by everyone in life. Her artistic pieces have been in exhibitions in galleries, cultural centers, hotels and restaurants, national art festivals and museums, as well as expositions and festivals around the world. Paris was one of her last stops.

The Artist & Life organization was the one in charge of arranging the exhibition in Paris, as a fundraising activity for children in Vietnam. Wien participated with seven paintings that were a reflection of her talent and that of all Latin American artists, at least for a few days. “I brought contemporary art; surreal and filled with magical realism”, says Wien, who declares that “presenting in Paris is not easy for anyone”, even with her 30 year career fully dedicated to art and with exhibitions in the United States and the Dominican Republic, among other places.

The teacher’s teachers
To understand her love for art, it’s important to begin with her first strokes in life, using pen and ink. She learned from the renowned artists Manuel de la Cruz Gonzalez and Francisco Amiguetti. They taught her not only the technique, but they showed her how to appreciate art. “With them, I learned the foundations, the forms”, she declares, and then states; “One is born with art inside”.

“I started to take painting lessons in high school, and knew since then that this was my calling. I studied oil painting at the Anastasio Alfaro, and the pen nib technique at the Luis Dobles School. As I got married and had a child, it was not easy, but I continued studying with Don Manuel,” she remembers. Honesty, discipline, her family, and her artistic rebelliousness were the building blocks to become what she is today.

With such mentors, her only option was to start right: The National Museum hosted her two first exhibitions, one in 1979 and the other in 1980.

Art has been her battle horse, which has helped her through the rough times in her life, such as her father’s death. “He loved life, and always pulled through, no matter what. He taught me to appreciate people for whom they were, and that’s the way I grew up, with that same love for life.”

Through the years, her art has matured and so has she. “I try to express my experiences through my paintings; everything I have learned, my parents’ legacy, the value of things and the stumbles I’ve had in life.”

After a long mourning break, Ana has begun once again to do what she does best: paint. She has come back as never before, strongly, with a lot of marathon like exhibitions in the last few years. “I am devoted to art with my body and soul. I love it and that is why I keep painting. The truth is, I feel good, and I know that people also feel good with my work.”

Her paintings, as her smile, transmit an unusual vitality. For her, the trigger in the artistic process she experiences is the strength in her art. “Reason is not usually the best way to reach people; they need something they can feel and like”. Ana Wien knows it and applies it, without a plan, like a bing-bang of colors.
