We spent one full day in the Arenal area. In the morning, we took the hanging bridges tour, which I would highly recommend. We saw howler monkeys, capuchin monkeys, a 3-toed sloth, eye lash viper snake, leaf cutter ants, many different birds and plants. We had time to return to the lodge for lunch and a little rest before going on the Volcano hike to the 1992 eruption followed by dinner and relaxing in the hot pools at the Tabacon Resort. I would have like to go out on Lake Arenal-something to look forward to on our next visit.

Seems like you had a great day, but I'm planning to stay over at least one or two full days in the area to be able to explore and see much more. I see on the map at least two ways to get there. What is your recommendation about the road?

Yes, there are several ways to get to Arenal, depending on which direction you come from. If you come from San Jose my recommendation is to take highway 1 all the way to the Naranjo exit. Then follow the signs to Cuidad Quesada and La Fortuna. This is a narrow and winding road, but the views are spectacular. Don’t forget to stop at the park in Zarcero, nice clean town particularly noted for a topiary garden outside its church in which the shrubs are trimmed into the shapes of various animals.

After Zarcero you will start looking down at the beautiful plains of San Carlos. If it is clear, soon you will see the perfect cone of the Arenal volcano. This view will prepare you for a beautiful ride that you will enjoy all the way to Arenal. Next you will pass Cuidad Quesada, main city in the area. Follow the signs from here to Arenal, you will be driving through several plantations of all types, this is a blessed land where almost every agricultural product grows well. The closer you get to Arenal going through the small villages on the road all the way to La Fortuna, the more impressive the volcano looks.

It is a tiring ride, but it will certainly be worth while!
