San Jose &  Central Valley

The Capital of Costa Rica, San Jose lies at an altitude of 3,770 feet on a 20 mile by 50 mile plateau known as the Central Valley. Surrounding the valley are majestic mountains to the north and high hills to the south  which are honeycombed with suburbs and farms, and which this author makes his home.

San Jose, where roughly 35% of all Costa Ricans live, is the pulse of the country. Government, Finance and Economic sectors all headquarter here. It is also the starting point for most travelers as they begin to explore Costa Rica. The Central Valley holds much for the eager tourist.

Volcanoes Poas and Irazu are just  40 minutes from most San Jose hotels, and whose summits can

easily be reached by car.
